How old are the sailors?

Simply stated, the sailors will be fifteen years old and younger.  More particularly, the IODA Class Rule states:  “Any boy or girl may enter until 31st December of the year in which he or she attains the age of 15 years.”  That means that for 2010 events, eligible sailors shall be born on or after January 1, 1995.

How many racers are we expecting?

300 to 450, arriving in waves (130 for team racing 7/17-19); 80 for Girls Nationals 7/20); 300- 400 for Fleet Racing in Fleet Nationals and Green Fleet 7/20-24 -overlapping, not cumulative)

Is this an open event?

The event is open to any sailor meeting the age and USODA membership requirements.  No qualification necessary.  See the NOR for specific requirements.

Is the event open to competitors from outside the US?

Yes, competitors must be current members of USODA or the IODA National Authority fro the country of their residence and meet all other eligibility requirements specified in the NOR.

Are the racers really coming from all over the country?

Absolutely, we had sailors at the Nationals in CA last year, although cross to coast travel is diminished.

Why was FBYC and Deltaville approached to host this prestigious event?

Event Co-Chair Noel Clinard: “FBYC was asked to host this event due to its superb Junior Sailing Program and because of its performance in hosting prior USODA, US Sailing and Flying Scot events. We accepted the invitation because when asked, key members of the Deltaville community, and parents were incredibly enthusiastic, volunteering their support, almost before they knew what they were volunteering to do.”

What is USODA?

It stands for United States Optimist Dinghy Association and it is the national class organization for Optimist sailing in the United States. For more information see

Who is the host?

While Fishing Bay Yacht Club is the host club, the entire event will be conducted under the auspices of the Deltaville Community Association. This event would not be possible without the support of many local organizations providing facilities, in-kind contributions and funding. To date, those Local Hosts are: Deltaville Boatyard, The Deltaville Community Association, The Deltaville Maritime Museum, Jackson Creek Condos, Harbor House, Norton Yacht Sales and Christchurch School.

What is an Opti?

The Optimist Dinghy or “Opti” is a single handed, gaff rigged, centerboard, sailing pram, used by USODA in the US and as the IOD (International Optimist Dinghy) worldwide. It is the principal boat for Youth Sailing competition in the World. There are thousands, if not tens of thousands, of them on the water. The class rules are the IODA Class Rules.

Will there be a Green Fleet?

Yes, there will be a Green Fleet. They will sail at roughly the same times as the Red/Blue/White fleet. Tom Coleman will be coach to all of the Green Fleet sailors.

Do Green Fleet boats need to be measured?

No, Green Fleet boats will not go through the measurement process.  But they will go through a Safety Check.

How early can we arrive to practice?

The regatta site at the Deltaville Museum and Deltaville Boatyard will NOT be open to competitors until Thursday, July 15th.

How do I register?

Registration and entry can only be done online using the USODA automated Event Registration System.

How do I register if I’m not a US resident?

Non-US residents are most welcome to participate and shall contact the USODA Executive Director at to obtain access to the online registration system.

Where can I dock/anchor my cruising boat?

We have a list of docking and anchorage accommodations for boats larger than 25′ and unable to fit up the creek to the Deltaville Maritime Museum dock/anchorage where the coach boats will be moored.

Is the pool at Deltaville Boatyard open to Opti sailors and family members?

No.  The pool at Deltaville Boatyard is not large enough to safely accommodate all of the optimist sailors and their families and will only be open to existing slip holders at Deltaville Marina.

Can a sailor only participating in the Fleet Championship check in and be measured during Team Race and Girls registration/check-in times?

Any sailor can check-in any time registration is open.  Any sailor can go through measurement whenever measurement is open, but preference will be given to sailors competing in the earlier events should the number sailors exceed the capacity to measure them.

Are there spectator boats available?

A list of rental boats and commercial charter boats are available for spectators.
